Olympic Opening Vancouver

The 21st Winter Olympics opened in Vancouver on Friday night, Feb 12, amid pomp and pageantry at the famous BC Place. Canadian Governor-General Michaelle Jean, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) president John Furlong and IOC president Jacques Rogge were among the 60,000 people who attended the grand opening ceremony broadcast live around the world.

Before the ceremonies, aboriginal youth from the First Nations -- a term used to describe Canada's native people before the Europeans came here -- welcomed the guests to the mega sports show.

The opening celebration was marred by sadness over the the death of 21-year-old competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili from Georgia who died after a crash while training at Whistler.

The GCP event was set for four hours beginning at 6 pm local Vancouver time (02:00 to 06:00 GMT). The result is Chisquare 14237.623 on 14400 df for p = 0.831 and Z = -0.957.

It is important to keep in mind that we have only a tiny statistical effect, so that it is always hard to distinguish signal from noise. This means that every "success" might be largely driven by chance, and every "null" might include a real signal overwhelmed by noise. In the long run, a real effect can be identified only by patiently accumulating replications of similar analyses.
